    JAMAL EDWARDS: Founder SB.TV

Jamal Edwards founded SB.TV  in 2006 . He began filming rap freestyles with a handycam, which he would then upload to his YouTube account. For the first three years Edwards acted alone to provide amateur footage regarding many British grime artists, such as Dizzee Rascal, Wiley, Chipmunk and Tinchy Stryder, with the first SB.TV video being uploaded in February 2007. As the channel began to attract more attention, it also began offering lifestyle interviews and event coverage, and a production team of ten was established. Recently, the company has cited its aim to become a more ‘diverse youth lifestyle broadcaster,’ incorporating more genres of music. This has been seen in the inclusion of acoustic artists such as Ed Sheeran and Nicki Minaj.  In February 2011, SB.TV launched their own music label Just Jam (an imprint of Sony RCA) and recently announced their first signing as east London MC, Maxsta. In March 2011 it had been suggested that the company are expected to go into business with restaurant chain Nandos. In August 2011, Jamal was seen starring in a Google Chrome advertisement, which tracked the emergence of SB.TV as one of the UK’s rising youth broadcasters. The SB.TV site subsequently crashed as close to a million people googled “Jamal Edwards. This was revealed to be the most watched YouTube video advertisements in 2011. Such has been the success of SB.TV that Edwards has been credited with helping to ‘reinvigorating’ the UK Rap and Grime scene.

Shakka recently released an 11 track mixtape titled The Shakka Crown Affair. The concept of the mixtape is taken from The Thomas Crown Affair which sees Shakka play an art thief who ‘borrows’ beats  from Lil Wayne, J.Dila, Coldplay and Calvin Harris creating his very own unique blend of r&b, soul, reggae, jazz and hip-hop in a way that  I  haven’t herd before!

  • PRICK OF THE DAY: HUEY MORGAN ‘ U.K. HIP-HOP ARTISTS WOULD SELL THEIR MAMA FOR A ROLEX. IT’S ALL CRAP’

    posted December 13th, 2011

Huey Morgan,  a member of The Fun Lovin’ Criminals has accused U.K. hip-hop artists of writing “fake” music just to make money! Speaking on The Jo Whiley Music Show he says:

“I’m from New York, and that’s where hip-hop was born, and that’s where it’s from. It was originally a communication tool, from borough to borough, from Queens to Brooklyn, from Manhattan to Staten Island… Hip-hop music is a lifestyle. It’s not professional wrestling. (Current rap music) is not real, the music’s made by somebody else and these guys are rapping about… a car or a girl. I didn’t hear any self-deprecating English humour in there. I think irony is dead as far as that goes. These guys are just trying to make money.

“U.K. hip-hop artists would sell their mama for a Rolex. It’s all c**p. I’m talking about Tinie Tempah, Lethal Bizzle. Dizzee (Rascal), when I first heard (his) song, I thought there was something wrong with him. I didn’t get it and I grew up on hip-hop.”

“UK hip-hop artists would sell their mama for a Rolex. I’m talking about Tinie Tempah, Lethal Bizzle. Dizzee Rascal, when I first heard his song, I thought there was something wrong with him. I didn’t get it and I grew up on hip-hop. Paul Simon is from Queens, he probably came from a rougher neighbourhood than Lethal Bizzle did. Go to South Bronx in 1978, that’s tough. People are shooting at other people, like random drive-bys in Los Angeles.

“NWA comes out, those guys came from the street. I see kids, Chipmunk and stuff like that, walking around like they think they own the world. I don’t hate the game, I understand what it is. To me, I might be an old man now, but it’s kind of fake. Rap was never supposed to be commercial. Now it’s not hip-hop, it’s ‘hip-pop’.”

I didn’t know that Tinie Tempah, Lethal Bizzle and Dizzee Rascal were fundamentally hip-hop artists!! Hmmmm so I guess that would be why he ‘didn’t get it’.

I really hope Huey wasn’t referring to UK hip-hop as a whole! I wonder if he has listened to music from the likes of Mystro, S.A.S, AKS, Akala, Roots Manuva, Sway, Black The Ripper, Ty and Stylah…..probalably not!

Plus like American mainstream/commercial hip-hop artists, anyone with sense will know that artists such as Dizzee Rascal and Tinie Tempah want and are making money! Who the hell wants to be a broke musician?? Who wants to be broke full stop?

Paul Simon coming from a rougher neighbourhood than Lethal Bizzle maybe true, but nevertheless, just because London may not experience nearly as much drive by shootings as Los Angeles should not mean that someone can not rap about their own experiences! These are british artists writing about their British experience which is less violent and aggressive than the Americans! It’s all relative! Damn ass!
