YOU CANT BOX BASHY – Exclusive Interview!

posted September 30th, 2009

Brown-Eyez caught up with the multi-talented  rising star Bashy, where he told us that he wont be pigeon holed as a  Grime artist as there is more to him then music. He also gave us the low down on his latest projects.

BROWN-EYEZ – Firstly I would like to congratulate you on your MOBO nominations for Best UK Act and Best Album. How do you feel about being nominated for these awards?

BASHY – Yeah man I’m excited, hopefully I can win them both. It’s a good look as well because I am an independent artist so it means a lot to let us know that we are competing against everyone else.

BROWN-EYEZ – What was your response to the reviews of your latest track “Your Wish Is My Command”?? Especially regarding the video???

BASHY – It takes people along time to understand something that is different and then grasp it, because I’m not doing what everyone   else is doing.  People didn’t understand it, but after a while people started to really enjoy it and saw that I took a risk and it has paid off!

BROWN-EYEZ – What was it like working with Estelle’s sister H Boogie?

BASHY – It was amazing, she is a super talent.  I have worked with her and her sister and they are both different, they are really good.

BROWN-EYEZ – Who was the most enjoyable to work with?

BASHY – They are both enjoyable but just in different ways. Estelle is further down the path so she works the studio very well and H Boogie is just extremely creative.

BROWN-EYEZ – Is it pressurising being a grime artist within the mainstream industry?

BASHY – Well I am not just a grime artist! I came from the grime scene that is where I started out, but yeah my music is quite real, I don’t think the wider masses are ready for that.

BROWN-EYEZ – What kind of artist would you say you are then???

BASHY – I’m just different to everyone else, I’m someone that is creating their own path, someone who is innovative and not scared to take risks and be different from the crowd.

I’m not saying that I am not Grime, but I am just saying not to pigeon hole me with that sort of title! I don’t want to be considered a Hip-Hop artist or nothing. I love Hip-Hop and I do Hip-Hop music, I love Grime and I do Grime music, but I’m not limiting myself to be put in a box
.

BROWN-EYEZ – On your debut album Catch Me If You Can” you worked with various artists such as N-Dubz, Wretch 32 and Jamelia. Is there anyone else from the UK that you would like to work with???

BASHY – I like Amy Winehouse,  (I love her voice), Beverly Knight (I grew up on her music) and Jay Kay.

BROWN-EYEZ – I herd you are playing the lead role in the play “Markus the Sadist”, give us an insight into your character Markus.

BASHY – it’s a big Hip-Hop theatre production about a young mans journey where he sort of looks at his life and the decisions that he has made and how it effects his life and his music career.

BROWN-EYEZ- Are there any similarities between you and Markus??

BASHY – Yeah there are similarities definitely because I have come from that journey of being a unsigned artist and having various people try to exploit your naivety, but I think that is where the similarities end.

BROWN-EYEZ – You are also starring in the film “Shank” as well as featuring in the Universal Picture film 4,3,2, 1, which is directed by Noel Clarke. What is it like working with him?

BASHY – It’s a bit different, because as a director your mission is to direct the actors and get the best out of them, so when he is talking to the cast he is not talking to them as Bashy, it is Ashley Thomas, so its cool, I like it, he is very professional.

BROWN-EYEZ – What is the worst and best moment in your career so far?

BASHY – The best moment of my career so far is where I am at right now! I am acting in 2 feature films, I have an album, 3 MOBO nominations (1 from last year), I won a Urban Music Award for Most inspirational artist (2008) and I won a Screen Nation Award for Best Music Performance in Film/TV (2008).

The worst moment of my career was when I wasn’t recognised at all,  when I wasn’t living my dream!

BROWN EYEZ  – What are the Top 3 tunes playing on your ipod right now??

BASHY – 1. Fabolous and Lil Wayne – Salute

2. Jay Z feat Alicia Keys – Empire State of Mind

3. Jay Z feat J.Cole – A star is Born a start is born

(it reminds me of “Black Boys”)

BROWN-EYEZ- Who would you – Shag, Marry and tell to keep it moving out of: Aliesha Dixon, Keisha Buchanan and Alexandra Burke?

BASHY – I would marry them all.

BROWN-EYEZ – Where do you see yourself in the 5 years time?

BASHY –  I will leave that for people to see!!!

It was great interviewing Bashy, I found him forthcoming and very diplomatic!! He is definitely going places!!! Good luck at the MOBO Awards!!!

Bashy’s debut album “Catch Me If You Can” is out now!!
